Frequently Asked Questions

Who are we?

We are a group of ordinary people of all ages and backgrounds who seek to enjoy and experience life to the full, who have come to believe that God exists and cares about us, and our world.  This care is best seen and expressed in the person of Jesus Christ who we believe was and is God with us. That life only makes sense when we have a spiritual dimension that includes getting to know about, then know, the author, giver and sustainer of life.

We believe our faith to be far more than wishful thinking, a crutch to support us because we cannot face life ‘home alone in the universe’, or a comfort blanket. Rather we believe that our faith to be built on not just our subjective experience but the evidence that has stood the test of harsh scrutiny and found by many to be true.

Having experienced something of the love and kindness of God breaking into our lives through Jesus we encourage and sometimes facilitate others going on an open ended journey of discovery in the hope that they too will meet and entrust themselves the God who we believe is and cares for us.

What kind of church are we?

We have recently adopted a mission statement which seeks to express the kind of church we aspire to be:

With Christ at the centre of all we do, we seek to be a loving, welcoming, worshipping and healing community, who seek to declare and demonstrate the Kingdom of God wherever the Lord has called us to be.

When and where do we meet?

We are a church of all ages and backgrounds. Most Sundays we meet on two sites:

  • Westbury Leigh Church of England Primary School, Leigh Park at 10.30 am - see map

  • Stormore Baptist Chapel, Dilton Marsh at 10.45am and 6.00 pm - see map

As a church we have the privilege of being able to provide  a variety of worship styles that suits a broad spectrum of choices. Several times throughout the year we join together for worship and other activities.

What activities do we run?

We run various housegroups, a club for 5-11 year olds called Friday Quest that meets in Westbury Leigh C of E School every Friday during School Term time, a monthly prayer meeting, various social activities. On the second Tuesday of each month we lead a service in Lyes Grove Residential Home, Dilton Marsh.

As a church we belong to Churches Together in Westbury that runs Café Base, a Youth Club seeking to work with predominantly non-churched young people in our town. Our minister is also involved with other clergy in school assemblies.

What links do we have?

Our church belongs to the Baptist Union of Great Britain and also to the West of England Baptist Association - WEBA.
We also belong to Westbury Churches Together and we are affiliated to the Evangelical Alliance.
Our minister is an accredited Baptist minister and we have links with the Baptist Missionary Society and Wycliffe Bible Translators.
A complete list of organisations that our church supports can be found on our Links page.

What is a Baptist Church?

Baptist Churches belong to the mainstream of Christian faith. The Baptist element is emphasised because we believe that people who became followers of Jesus and were baptised did so after making an individual response to Jesus and his message.
